SPECIAL ISSUE: PACIFIC ISLANDS DIASPORA, IDENTITY, AND INCORPORATION

Abstract

This special issue explores the increasing mobility of Pacific Islanders in the context of globalization, improved transportation, and shifting national borders. Building on a long history of purposeful migration, the collection examines contemporary Pacific diasporas through ethnographic case studies of Polynesian and Micronesian societies. It highlights the enduring cultural connections between migrants and their homelands, emphasizing remittances, kinship ties, and traditional exchanges as vital mechanisms of social cohesion. Inspired by Epeli Hau‘ofa’s concept of a “sea of islands,” the issue frames migration as an extension of historical voyaging traditions rather than a break from the past. Through interdisciplinary perspectives, it contributes to the growing discourse on Pacific migration, offering insights into the evolving relationships between mobility, identity, and belonging in a transnational world.
