Hosted by Lance Chase, this episode of Focus Hawaii features Peter Johnson, a BYU–Hawaii assistant professor of accounting and the university’s first African American full‑time faculty member. Johnson shares his remarkable journey from growing up in Jamaica, Queens, to moving to Hawai‘i as a teenager, excelling in high school sports, and playing college basketball at BYU–Hawaii, Dixie College, and Southern Utah University. He discusses joining the Church at age 19, serving a mission in Alabama, and navigating issues of race, culture, and community both in the South and in Church life. Johnson reflects on his brief professional basketball opportunity in Belgium, his shift to public accounting with Grant Thornton, and his eventual love for teaching that brought him back to BYU–Hawaii—where he was named Professor of the Year. He also speaks candidly about family influences, educational challenges, interracial marriage, future PhD plans, and his desire to help students succeed academically and personally.
